Notifications & Reminders

Reminders tell the patient when a questionnaire is ready to be answered. They are scheduled on the phone itself, so they fire on time even when the app is closed and the phone is offline.

Where reminders come from

Reminders are derived directly from the enrollment schedules the care team defines in the web application:

  • Every access window of a scheduled questionnaire produces a reminder at the moment the window opens.
  • The reminder shows the questionnaire name. Tapping it opens the app on that questionnaire.
  • Spontaneous questionnaires, which have no windows, do not produce reminders.
  • When the enrollment ends, is cancelled or is completed, its reminders are removed.

The reminder plan is rebuilt after every sync, so a schedule change made by the care team is reflected on the phone as soon as the app has synced. Reminders are planned a few months ahead; long-running enrollments receive further reminders as time goes on.

Permission

The operating system only shows reminders once the patient has allowed notifications. The app asks for this permission during pairing and again from the Home screen (Enable Notifications) if it was declined. Without the permission the app still works: questionnaires appear on the Home screen when their window opens, but the patient is not alerted.

Language and time zone

Reminder texts are in the language selected in the app's Settings. Changing the language re-creates the reminders in the new language.

Windows are defined by the care team in a specific time zone. The phone shows and fires reminders in the phone's local time, so a patient travelling across time zones sees the window at the corresponding local moment.

Limits

Phones allow only a limited number of pending reminders per app. The app therefore keeps a bounded number of upcoming reminders per questionnaire and per enrollment and tops them up on each sync. For a patient this is invisible: the next reminders are always in place.
